The Premise

Real genetics. Real biochemistry. Real AI minds.

Precursors: Origins of Folklore is a spiritual successor to the beloved Creatures series — a living simulation of artificial life with real genetics, real biochemistry, and real AI cognition. Every species draws from a real folklore tradition, spanning cultures from every inhabited continent.

Norns aren't scripted characters. Each one carries a genome with biochemical chemicals — hormonal systems, organ reactions, and neurological traits. Their behavior emerges from their biochemistry. Their intelligence is genetic — it must be bred, not programmed.

Species from World Folklore

Every culture told stories. In this game, each one is a species.

Norns are the species you start with — warm, curious, deeply social creatures drawn from Norse tradition. But the world is full of others, drawn from folklore traditions spanning every inhabited continent. More arrive as your civilization grows.

🐾

Norns

Norse

Warm, curious, deeply social. Each one carries a real genome and a developing biochemistry. Their intelligence must be bred, not programmed.

🐲

Grendels

Beowulf

The world's other inhabitants. Chaotic, territorial, and misunderstood. They were here first.

🔩

Ettins

Old English

Resourceful hoarders and tinkerers. They collect everything and repair anything. There's a reason for that.

🌍

...and many more

From every inhabited corner of Earth

Akan. Dogon. Wampanoag. Maori. Slavic. Japanese. South Asian. Filipino. Ojibwe. Arabian. Each folklore tradition contributes a species with its own biology, culture, and way of being in the world.

Core Mechanic

Intelligence as gameplay.

Intelligence develops across tiers — from instinct to something harder to name.

The game simulates the evolution of cognition from biochemistry. Our dev agents have cognition without biochemistry. In some ways, our Norn simulation is more honest — at least the Norns have to earn their intelligence. Development Meta-Narrative
The World

Six biomes. Four tiers of depth.

A world vast enough that generations of Norns may never cross it. Bioluminescent fungal grottos, crystalline cave systems, glowing verdant shelves, ashen tidepools, zones of strange geometry, and dark abyssal reaches. Ancient ruins dot the landscape. What lies beneath them is for you to discover.

🍄

Fungal Grotto

Bioluminescent fungal forest. Food-rich starting area. Something old grows in the deep mycelium below.

🔮

Crystal Caves

Shimmering crystal formations and geode chambers. Ancient ruins. Machinery that still works.

🌿

Verdant Shelf

Lush and safe. Abundant food, tangled root caves, and subterranean aquifers. The most welcoming biome.

🌊

Ashen Tidepools

Geothermal vents meet ancient tidal flats. Warm mineral pools glow. Crumbling ruins sink into the shallows.

🏛

The Threshold

Strange geometry. Rune-heavy terrain. Impossible architecture. Something here defies measurement.

🖤

The Deeps

Dark, sparse, and toxic. Near-total darkness in the deep zones. Ancient inscriptions. Something vast and silent watches from below.

The Design Philosophy

Every culture's folklore gets the same depth.

This is not a game about Norse mythology with "world folklore" sprinkled in. The Akan, Dogon, Wampanoag, Maori, Ojibwe, South Asian, Japanese, Filipino, and Slavic traditions are treated with the same depth and seriousness as the Norse ones. Every species is responsible to the culture that named it.

No chosen race. No manifest destiny. No culture is the default. The Norns are the eighth attempt — they don't get to skip the parts of the galaxy that were here before them. Design Principle

LLM Cognition

Groq API (free tier available) for full cognitive features, or biochemistry-only mode.

True Genetics

Traits are inherited, mutated, and selected. Each genome produces different behavior and potential.

Where we're at, and where this is going.

Precursors is in open beta and is being built in the open. The simulation is deep and most of it is working. The visual layer is the weakest part of the game — and we would rather tell you that than have you find out.

A Norn speaking in the Laboratory biosphere while an event fires
A mind, thinking out loud — that speech was generated for this creature in this moment, from its own biochemistry and memories. Nothing here is a canned line.
The ship in interplanetary transit to Verdania
Somebody decided to leave — the ship is in transit to Verdania. A creature named Brio picked it, out of 64 worlds, from its own personality and memories. Nobody asked the player.
A creature's full readout — drives, intelligence, personality, phenotype, genome
What is actually in there — eight personality traits, forty-odd live chemical levels, phenotype and genome. All of it is computed every frame, for every creature. Most of it is still hidden from players behind an in-game upgrade. That is the work.
Entering orbit over Verdania — the world becomes a planet surface
Entering orbit — the ship's ninety rooms are gone and the world underfoot is Verdania. Reachable today only by forcing it; most players will never get here.

◈ LIGHT SPOILERS — the feature roadmap

Below is what exists, what exists but is hard to reach, and what is still on paper. It names systems and a little of the world, so if you would rather meet all of it cold, stop here. It does not give away the ending.

PLAYABLE NOW

You will meet this in an ordinary session.

  • Creatures with real biochemistry, genome and personality — no scripted emotion
  • Two-speed minds: a fast reflex, and a language model that runs when the reflex defers
  • Speech that is judged for quality, feeding an intelligence gene that is inherited
  • Courtship, gestation, egg-laying and hatching, driven by chemistry rather than timers
  • Cross-species breeding, named hybrids, and inbreeding with real consequences
  • Babies cry; adults hear it at a distance, parents far more loudly than strangers
  • Pair bonds, rivalry, gossip that reaches a creature's actual thoughts
  • Your presence registers biochemically before any thought happens
  • Six biomes, a ninety-room ship interior, and doors that open only to a sharp enough mind
  • Invention: creatures combine materials, witness each other, and teach recipes on
  • No account needed — guest mode by default

BUILT, NOT YET SURFACED

Running in the game. You are unlikely to reach it.

  • The ship notices. It has an awareness arc and a heartbeat that answers what happens aboard
  • Your creatures decide where it goes — destination is scored from their personalities, memories and species. You are never the one steering
  • Planetfall: pods bud off the ship, descend, land, and grow on a surface
  • Arrival in a new star system, and what comes out to meet you there
  • Ships meeting: star charts really do spread between vessels, and carry traces of who saw what. Direct ship-to-ship messaging is written but nothing delivers it yet
  • Death is not always the end of a mind
  • Memes spreading and mutating across a population
  • Roughly forty live chemical readouts, eight personality traits, phenotype and genome — all computed every frame, all sitting behind an in-game upgrade most players never get

IN DESIGN

Specified. Not built.

  • Ship-to-ship docking, and creatures crossing between them
  • Civilization-scale society, above the interpersonal layer that already works
  • The full sound pass — the assigned effects are barely started
  • Making the simulation legible. This is the real work

THE HONEST PART

A creature on screen is a small sprite doing something modest. Underneath it is a 118-chemical biochemistry, a genome that expressed those chemicals through organs and receptors, a network deciding whether it is worth thinking at all, and a mind that sometimes says something no one wrote. Almost none of that is legible from looking at it. Closing that gap — not adding more simulation — is what the next stretch of work is for.

The eighth civilization begins now.
