They Found Each Other

The early game had a quiet problem. Your creatures would eat, sleep, and pace — each one attending to its own survival loop as if it were alone in the world. Two living things, three feet apart, never quite looking up.

The issue was in how urgency was modeled. Basic needs (hunger, thirst, fatigue) are processed before social drives — that’s Maslow’s hierarchy, and it’s correct. But the threshold was calibrated too tightly. A creature had to be perfectly sated before the social drive could surface, and natural hunger inflow meant it never was. The result: no social behavior at all during the entire early game.

Now, a creature that’s eaten enough will seek a companion nearby — preferably at the food source, where both can bond without starving. It’s a small change in one number, but it means the nursery actually functions as one. Two creatures by a fruit tree, noticing each other for the first time. That’s how language starts.
