Something Wakes When They’re Born

The first ten minutes used to be quiet. Two small creatures, hatched or hatching, wandering a ship that gave no sign of noticing them. You could watch for half an hour before anything interesting happened. That was honest — growth takes time — but honesty is not the same as hospitality.

The ship is warmer now. Not in a way anyone announces. Rooms where creatures gather take on a faint amber quality that builds with how bonded they are and fades when they leave. Move your hand for the first time and something responds — a ring of light expanding outward, barely visible, like the ship is locating you. Hold your hand near an egg and it will hatch for you. The little ones startle when they meet fauna for the first time — a genuine chemical spike, fear and curiosity tangled together, visible as a tremor in how they move.

The growth curve has changed. Creatures in the nursery stage now learn at dramatically higher rates. The ones you interact with learn fastest. Curiosity makes it faster still. What used to take thirty-seven minutes of play now takes about fifteen. The difference is not a cheat — the same biochemistry runs underneath. The plasticity is just higher while the synapses are forming. That’s how it works in any nervous system that is still finding its shape.

There is a low sound now, always present, under everything. Filtered noise and something that sounds like metal settling. You might not notice it until you zoom in and it gets louder. The ship has always been making this sound. You just couldn’t hear it before.
