They Move Like They Mean It

The creatures used to shuffle. Two frames, back and forth, sliding across the deck plates like something projected rather than something alive. That’s over. Ship-dwelling species now walk with full multi-frame animation cycles. The Fylgja — the companion spirit that appears in certain circumstances — has been entirely redesigned. When you see something moving across the habitat now, it moves.

The neural architecture search completed its longest run yet. Fourteen species had their genomes optimized against thousands of simulated scenarios, selected not for obedience but for the behaviors that produced the most interesting emergent outcomes. Seven new species-specific cognitive modules have been deployed — each one perceives the world through the lens of its own folklore. A forest spirit forages differently than a trickster. They always should have.

Planetary surfaces now carry climate signatures derived from their position and composition. And the framework for extraction — harvesting resources from worlds the ship visits — is in place. Different species react to extraction in character. Some of those reactions are not cooperative.
