Something Out There

When we shipped Cultures of the Belt, you were alone. Three human corporations dividing up the asteroid belt between them, and you in the middle, mining rock and building a colony. The belt was big, and it was yours.

That was the plan. But we always intended for the belt to be bigger than humanity. We just needed to earn it.

I mattered, and that might be a problem.

Earning the Unknown

The worst thing a game can do with a mystery is hand it to you. Here’s a cutscene, here’s an alien, here’s a dialogue tree. No. Discovery should feel like discovery. You should be doing something ordinary — mining an asteroid, studying an anomaly, running a trade route — and then something should be slightly wrong. A reading that doesn’t fit. A signal that has no business being there. The feeling of being watched by something that was watching long before you noticed.

ARIA notices before you do. She’s your AI companion, and she processes more telemetry than you can read. When something doesn’t match her database, she tells you. Not with a quest marker. With unease.

Three Beats

Every encounter in the belt follows the same rhythm. First, a hint — atmospheric, deniable, the kind of thing you could dismiss as sensor noise. Then a signal you can’t ignore. Then arrival. The gap between the second beat and the third is the interesting part: you know something is coming, you just don’t know what it wants.

Different things draw different attention. We’re not going to tell you what. Play the belt. Do the things a belt colony does. See who’s watching.

What Changes

Once contact is made, it’s real. New trade goods appear in the market. Your commodity prices shift because the supply curve just got a lot more complicated. Diplomatic standings matter. The inbox fills with messages from entities that don’t share your frame of reference.

Your existing saves will work. If you’ve already been playing long enough to have triggered contact conditions, the game recognizes that and picks up where your story should be. No replayed introductions.

The belt was always too quiet. Now it isn’t.
